Pettersson has largely played on the Penguins top defensive pairing this season with fellow Swede Erik Karlsson. He plays as a defensive defenseman with little offensive upside, topping out at 30 points last season. His defensive numbers throughout his career are consistently positive-impact and have continued to stay that way this season, even if the Penguins are sitting at a league worst 3.9 GA/G.
There are several contending teams that could use a stay-at-home defenseman, but none more than the Edmonton Oilers. With last night’s Darnell Nurse injury, the Oilers’ blueline is looking thin. It’s 2024 and Travis Dermott is playing on your second D-Pairing. It’s time for the Oiler’s to make an upgrade with Marcus Pettersson.
Daily Faceoff: Oilers’ Defense Pairings
While the Oilers won’t want to give up impact-roster player’s, there is a certain player on their AHL team who could make an NHL impact later this season. Roby Jarventie is a 22-year-old forward who has put up decent AHL numbers the last few years as seen below.
Roby Jarventie stats from HockeyDB.com
DobberProspects describes Jarventie as:
“A goal-scoring winger with great size and very good speed. A modern power forward who uses his size to protect the puck. Isn’t afraid to drive to the net. Owns a great shot and decent playmaking abilities. Has potential to become a top-six winger and a 30-goal scorer. Not a well-rounded player, so there is some risk involved as well.” – Jokke Nevalainen Sept. 21st 2023
Jarventie missed training camp and the first 11 games of the AHL with a knee injury and may require some time to reacclimate before he is ready to push for the NHL. However, with the Penguins currently in free-fall, the Penguins coaching staff could see Jarventie as a call-up candidate who has the offensive potential and confidence to make an immediate impact in the forward group.
The Oilers would likely have to add a second-round pick to the deal as Marcus Pettersson is an established NHL defensemen. The Penguins would likely then flip this pick to add an additional player in a later deal.
This trade allows Edmonton to pick up a top-4 defensemen for relatively cheap, as well allows Pittsburgh a young potentially-impactful scoring winger and some draft capital.
